“I am proud to speak openly about seeing a therapist and prioritizing my mental health, and every time I share, I get at least one message from someone who thanks me for being brave and sharing my story.”
Hi Julia! Tell me about the work that you do at Telesco Creative Group and your role as a Social Media Director?
Working at Telesco Creative Group is SUPER fun. As the Social Media Director, I get to apply my love of learning every single day. The world of social media is constantly evolving, and I get to work alongside a creative, hard-working team that constantly challenges me to think outside of the box. Every day at the agency is different; some days I’m meeting with clients, sometimes I’m working on analytical reports and sometimes I’m creating and scheduling content. I love that I get to do what I love every day.
I love what you’re doing on YouTube. How did you start vlogging and creating videos? What motivated you to start?
Honestly, my friend Mimi Ikonn inspired me to start. I met Mimi at a conference/workshop led by Seth Godin, my marketing icon. Mimi has been a YouTuber for years and I noticed just how connected I felt to her when watching her videos. It looked like fun to create videos and tell a story that way, so I made my first vlog in February 2017. I was hooked immediately.
Today’s age is all about ‘The Digital Age.’ With a powerful advertising platform such as Instagram, small businesses and brands can reach a wider audience. In what ways do you think Instagram helps you build your brand?
I think InstaStories is where it’s at. I use InstaStories daily to connect with my audience and provide value through entertainment, education or inspiration when I can! I find that video is the best way to connect with an audience, so I’m going ALL IN.
Besides Instagram, what other social media platforms do you use? Which platform do you find the most appealing for your brand?
I love YouTube, obviously! Vlogging is a lot of work, but I have so much fun doing it. I also love Facebook because it is such a powerful platform. You can do live video, post any type of content, run 10+ different types of advertisements… There is so much power for businesses on Facebook, which is why Facebook is my favorite channel for the clients that I work with.
Tell me about the most recent collaboration you’ve done. And are there any creatives in Buffalo (or outside of the city) that you’d like to work with?
The most recent collaboration I did was with Taylor Flynn, of Succulents & Sunnies! We went to three of Buffalo’s local bookstores to explore the vibe and collections. She wrote a blog post and I made a video. To answer the second part of this question, YES! There are SO many awesome creatives in this city. I’d love to do a vlog with YOU, girl. Also, @theroamingbuffalo, Pat and Billy because they’re kickass on YouTube, @kinandkindling, her lovely sister @inthebuf and @babersprout. I feel like my answer should be are there any creatives in Buffalo that I WOULD’NT like to work with? Cause the answer is no.
Who are your favorite Influencers/Creatives that inspire your work?
I love following Jenna Kutcher on Instagram. She’s real, she’s raw and she’s super relatable. Her photos are beautiful and I really appreciate her transparency on social media. She inspires me to bring my most authentic self to my work every single day.
Tell me one thing that most people may not know about you.
Despite being small, I can eat more tacos than almost anyone I know. And sushi. Basically, don’t judge a book by a cover cause this girl can eat! Did I mention I really like food?
Are there any projects you are working on, and/or upcoming events that we should know about?
Nothing that I’m ready to announce just quite yet, but keep an eye on my YouTube channel! I have a TON of Buffalo-centric features of individuals in the community and spots to shop or see that you’re not going to want to miss!
What is your most proud moment you have achieved as a Social Media Enthusiast?
I’ve had a number of people message me after I’ve gotten REALLY raw on social media and shared my experiences with therapy. I am proud to speak openly about seeing a therapist and prioritizing my mental health, and every time I share, I get at least one message from someone who thanks me for being brave and sharing my story. Those moments are my proudest — knowing that I can help someone feel empowered. Of course I love helping people get savvier on social media, but when I can impact them in a more personal way, that is what lights me up beyond belief.
Do you have any short or long term goals for the New Year?
More speaking engagements! I want to grow my opportunities for public speaking in and around the local community. Speaking on stage is where I shine, and I’m looking forward to doing more of that in 2018!
